A Snowman's Closer View

Snowman

Grades: 1 and 2

Goal: students will be challenged to do a close up view of a snowman. They will draw 2 circles and add details to the snowman and background.

Time Needed: two 50 minute class periods.

Objectives:
·        Learn to look at things in a different way. For example; snowmen do not always have to be drawn from top to bottom showing all three circles or spheres
·        Learn the proportion of the face using the snowman; 2 eyes, nose and mouth
·        Use geometric shapes to put snowman together

Vocabulary:
·        Proportion- proper relation between things as to size and quantity

§117.5. Art, Grade 1.
(a) Introduction.
(1) Four basic strands--perception, creative expression/performance, historical and cultural heritage, and critical evaluation--provide broad, unifying structures for organizing the knowledge and skills students are expected to acquire. Students rely on their perceptions of the environment, developed through increasing visual awareness and sensitivity to surroundings, memory, imagination, and life experiences, as a source for creating artworks. They express their thoughts and ideas creatively, while challenging their imagination, fostering reflective thinking, and developing disciplined effort and problem-solving skills.
(2) By analyzing artistic styles and historical periods students develop respect for the traditions and contributions of diverse cultures. Students respond to and analyze artworks, thus contributing to the development of lifelong skills of making informed judgments and evaluations.
(b) Knowledge and skills.
(1.1) Perception- The student develops and organizes ideas from the environment. The student is expected to:
(A) Identify similarities using the senses; and
(B) Identify color, texture, form, line, and emphasis in nature and in the human-made environment.
(1.2) Creative expression/performance- The student expresses ideas through original artworks, using a media with appropriate skill. The student is expected to:
(A) Invent images that combine a variety of colors, forms, and lines;
(B) Place forms in orderly arrangement to create designs; and
(C) Increase manipulative skills, using materials to produce a drawing.
(1.3) Historical/cultural heritage- The student demonstrates an understanding of culture as records of human achievement. The student is expected to:
(C) Identify the use of art in everyday life.
(1.4) Response/evaluation- The student makes informed judgments about personal artworks and the works of others. The student is expected to:
(A) Express ideas about personal artworks

(a) Introduction.

(2.2) Creative expression/performance- The student expresses ideas through original artworks, using a media with appropriate skill. The student is expected to:
(A) Express ideas and feelings in artworks, using a variety of colors, forms, and lines;
(B) Create effective compositions, using design elements and principles; and
(C) Identify and practice skills necessary for producing a drawing using a variety of art materials.
(2.3) Historical/cultural heritage- The student demonstrates an understanding of culture as records of human achievement. The student is expected to:
(A) Identify stories and constructions in a variety of artworks;
(2.4) Response/evaluation-The student makes informed judgments about personal artwork. The student is expected to:
(A) Define reasons for preferences in personal artworks


Lesson Plan Procedure:
Day 1
Welcome students, sit at the carpet
Now with the weather changing to cold days feeling as the winter couldn't wait to get here; our new project is going to be drawing a snowman. How many of you have had the opportunity to build a snowman? Do you like building them? Today we will have the opportunity to draw one and study its shape and form.
What is he made of? What does he wear?

The objectives for the day..
1.       Draw a close up view of the snowman in pencil
2.       The snowman should be made of two circles
3.       Top circle will be his head; add eyes, a carrot for his nose and a mouth
4.       Circle # 2 will be part of his body; add a scarf and buttons
5.       Design a hat
The materials are already on your (students) tables. Students will sit at their assigned seats. The objectives are listed on the board for students to check their progress. The example will be displayed too.

Students will have the rest of the class period to work and they will have time for clean up closer to the end of the class. Next time students will finish their project.

Day 2  
Welcome students and sit at the carpet.
Today we are finishing our project.
Let’s take a look to our objectives on the board.
Objectives for the day…
1.       Trace snowman with sharpie
2.       Use oil pastels to color your drawing; snowman white, carrot nose orange and the rest any color you want
3.       Draw a horizon line and add snowflakes to the background
Students will work on project during this class period and they will have time to clean up closer to the end of the class period.
I will announce that the following week their teacher Mr. Schuppert will be teaching all classes again…

Rubric:
        Student will be graded on the levels below based on the following directions:
                - Students production of artwork, attention towards craftsmanship, completion of assignment within the time limit given to the assignment.
                - Participation in class, demonstration of effort throughout the project, positive attitude, and follows directions.
                        4 - Student's progress consistently exceeds expectations
                        3 - Student's progress is satisfactory and meets criteria of the assignment
                        2 - Student shows some progress towards meeting expectation, but there is need for improvement.

                        1 - Progress is consistently below expectations.
