Op Art
adapted by E. Luna
Grade: 3
Goal: students will identify how the optical illusion is created by creating their own three dimensional hand design showing movement. This lesson will help students understand how art can be created to trick the eye.

Time needed: about two 50 minute class periods.

Objectives:
·        Students will manipulate the elements of design, line, shape and space to create the “illusion” of movement on a flat surface. This movement will fool and disturb the eye causing the viewer to look away and then look back.
Vocabulary:
·        Optical Illusion- an object causing a false visual impression

§117.11. Art, Grade 3.
Introduction
1 Four basic strands--perception, creative expression/performance, historical and cultural heritage, and critical evaluation--provide broad, unifying structures for organizing the knowledge and skills students are expected to acquire. Students rely on their perceptions of the environment, developed through increasing visual awareness and sensitivity to surroundings, memory, imagination, and life experiences, as a source for creating artworks. They express their thoughts and ideas creatively, while challenging their imagination, fostering reflective thinking, and developing disciplined effort and problem-solving skills.
2 By analyzing artistic styles and historical periods students develop respect for the traditions and contributions of diverse cultures. Students respond to and analyze artworks, thus contributing to the development of lifelong skills of making informed judgments and evaluations.
 Knowledge and skills
3.1Perception. the student develops and organizes ideas from the environment. The student is expected to:
(A) Identify sensory knowledge and life experiences as sources for ideas about visual symbols and
(B) Identify art elements such as color, texture, form, line, space and art principles such as pattern, rhythm, balance, proportion, and unity in artworks.
3.2 Creative expression/performance. The student expresses ideas through original artworks, using a variety of media with appropriate skill. The student is expected to:
(B) Develop an effective composition, using design skills; and
(C) Produce a drawing using art materials appropriately.

Interdisciplinary connections: math and anatomy of human body
Materials:
·        White drawing paper
·        Rulers
·        Pencils
·        Erasers
·        Color pencils
·        Examples of optical illusion- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsCCkg1YHTo&feature=related

Procedure:
Lesson will start by informing students we will be doing an optical illusion project. There will be some examples of Victor Vasarely for inspiration.

Students will start by tracing their hand on a piece of drawing paper. With a ruler they will then create a series of lines radiating from side to side from the outline of the hand. They will draw concave lines thru the whole hand from forearm to fingernails. Lines should be consistent. The curved lines will create the illusion that the piece is three-dimensional. Using colored pencils, students will color these alternating colors.

Rubric
Effective use of art media/materials:
·        Lines drawn neatly and outlined with skinny sharpie
·        Parallel lines across the paper to create the illusion of perspective
·        Smooth application and blending of colored pencils.
Clear Expression of Design Ideas:
·        Hand tracing with realistic look
·        Curves placed accurately to create the Op Art effect
·        Colors chosen meet the requirements; primary or secondary colors
Completion of composition:

·        Effort and effective use of time
